The Construction Numbers
Non-residential construction in the U.S. fell 0.5% in March 2025 to a seasonally adjusted annual rate of $1.25 trillion, retreating from February’s record-setting high according to the U.S. Census Bureau. Meanwhile spending declined in 11 of 16 non-residential subcategories, with private non-residential construction dropping 0.8% and public nonresidential spending slipping 0.2%.

WE’RE STILL OPTIMSTIC ABOUT THE FUTURE
In browsing the news we’ve noticed corporate announcements suggest businesses are hesitant to start new projects in light of uncertainty over tariffs, government funding, and other policy shifts. The numbers show that spending has slowed over the past year and as current projects wind down, there may be subdued construction activity.
Again, even though non-residential construction spending fell sharply in March, data center projects (more than 70% of the increase in private nonresidential construction spending between March 2024 and March 2025), are one of the few remaining source of construction industry momentum. Even so, the data shows public non-residential spending remains up 4.8% over last year, while private non-residential spending ticked up just 1.6% compared to the same period.
